Backpacker Campers AU Rental Terms
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR RENTALS
On arrival you will be required to sign a rental agreement with the operators of Backpacker Campers Australia. Here is a summary of their terms and conditions.
DEFINITIONS
The following definitions apply for the Terms and Conditions for Backpacker Campers Australia.
- The Supplier means the operator of Backpacker Campers Australia.
- The Client is also referred to as the hirer (s) or renter (s).
PAYMENT TERMS
* The initial deposit paid is non-refundable. Payment will be deducted from your nominated credit card at the time of confirmation(Visa or Mastercard only).
* The balance payable is due to the supplier upon collection of your vehicle.
* A bond amount of AU$3,500 for the Breezer, Nomad, Warrior and Wanderer or AU$5,000 for the Off-Roader 4wd is also due upon arrival. This amount is deducted from your credit card is fully refundable when the vehicle is returned to the correct location on time, is full of fuel and all other terms of the Rental Contract have been complied with. Please read the Terms and Conditions for full details.
Note: full balance of payment (including the deposit) will be collected at the time of confirmation if you have elected to process your booking in a currency different to AUD.
The deposit is non refundable. In addition to forfeiting your deposit, the following charges apply:
- If cancelled up to 25 days prior to pick-up No Further Fee
- If cancelled from 24 to 10 days prior to pick-up 20% of Total Rental
- If cancelled 9 to 4 days prior to pick-up 50% of Total Rental
- If cancelled 3 days prior or on day of pick up or No-Show 100% of Total Rental
- If vehicle is returned early for any reason whatsoever no refund is available for the unused portion of the hire
CREDIT CARDS
The credit card holder will be jointly and severally liable as a customer. Accepted credit cards are Visa Card and MasterCard. A non-refundable 2% administration fee will apply to all Visa and MasterCard transactions. Credit card administration fees also apply to debited vehicle security deposits and only the hirer’s credit card is acceptable to use for the purpose of the vehicle security deposit.

SMART PACK:
The Smart Pack for campervan rentals is payable per day in addition to the daily rental rate.
Nomad, Breezer, Warrior and Wanderer AU$36 per day (maximum AU$1,800 per rental)
Quattro AU$47 per day (maximum AU$2,350 per rental)
Off-Roader 4WD AU$51 per day (maximum AU$2,550 per rental)
In addition to the inclusions in the Flex Rate, the Smart Pack includes:
- Liability Reduction Option 2 (nil liability)
- Camping Chairs (1 per person travelling)
- LP Gas Refill (PGO - refill for gas bottle used for cooking and heating hot water in vehicles with a hot water facility upon return of vehicle)
- Linen and Bedding Packs (1 per person travelling) (This will be included in daily rates for travel from 1 November 2011)

BACKPACKER STRONGLY RECOMMENDS THE SMART PACK FOR TRAVEL WITH PEACE OF MIND.
FOR YOUR PROTECTION
Personal injury is covered in most cases through registration Third Party insurance. Backpacker strongly recommends that all people travelling in Australia take out personal travel insurance.
All vehicles are insured for the damage to the vehicle or to the property of a Third Party. The hirer is responsible for the first AU$3,500 (“the liability”) for the Breezer, Nomad, Warrior and Wanderer or AU$5,000 (“the liability”) for the Quattro and Off- Roader 4wd of the cost of damage to Third Party property or to the rented vehicle, including single vehicle accident, windscreen and tyre damage, towing and recovery costs, theft, fire, break-in or vandalism with the exception of the ‘exclusions’. This also includes the cost of the daily rental for the period the vehicle is off fleet for accident repairs.
The liability is applicable regardless of who is at fault and must be paid at the time the accident report is completed, not at the completion of the rental. The liability will be refunded if Backpacker is successful in recovering the cost of the damages from the Third Party. Please note that Third Party claims can take months to resolve.
The liability applies in respect of each claim, not rental.

The liability can be reduced, in most circumstances, by the purchase of Liability Reduction Option 1 or Liability Reduction Option 2. Note Liability Reduction Option 2 is included in the Smart Pack.

Tyre and Windscreen Cover

Where the hirer purchased tyre and windscreen cover unlimited windscreen and tyres will be covered for accidental damage.
Tyre and Windscreen cover can only be purchased in conjunction with Liability Reduction 2 or is included in the Smart Pack.

BACKPACKER STRONGLY RECOMMENDS OUR CUSTOMERS TAKE THE SMART PACK FOR TRAVEL WITH PEACE OF MIND.
EXCLUSIONS:
All liability cover will be made void if any of the following ‘Exclusions’ are breached:
1. Overhead and underbody damage to the vehicle.
2. Tyre and windscreen damage unless tyre and windscreen cover has been purchased.
3. Any water related damage which includes, but is not limited to:
a) any vehicle submersion
b) creek or river crossing
c) driving through flooded areas
d) beach driving
4. Personal belongings. Backpacker recommends the hirer does not leave valuables in the vehicle and that they have travel insurance to cover for the loss/damage of personal belongings.
5. Any damage caused by wilful misconduct (e.g. sitting or standing on the bonnet or roof of the vehicle).
6. Any damage caused while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
7. Damage caused to the vehicle by snow chains.
8. A single vehicle roll over occurs.
9. The Customer will be liable for any costs associated with the incorrect use of fuel or the use of Bio-Diesel which should not be used (fuel being diesel or petrol), or water or other contamination of fuel.
10. The cost to retrieve or recover a vehicle, which may include, but is not limited to a vehicle that has become bogged, submerged, caught, trapped, stuck or restricted in anyway and/or has been abandoned.
11. The cost to replace keys, which have been lost or retrieval of keys, which have been locked in a vehicle.
12. The vehicle rented may only be used to carry the maximum number of passengers as dictated by the vehicle type. If more passengers are carried than what is allowed Backpacker does not accept any liability.
13. Damage caused to the vehicle because total load (kg) has exceeded recommended load as stated in vehicle manual. Vehicles are not to be used for the purpose of transporting and haulage of goods other than what might be reasonably expected of a leisure rental.
14. Drivers not identified on the rental agreement and/or drivers that have a licence that has been cancelled or suspended and/or drivers who have a licence that is classified as a learners or probationary licence.
VEHICLE SECURITY DEPOSIT
Upon vehicle collection, a vehicle security deposit is required. The amount is determined by the Liability Reduction Option selected.
For security purposes, only a credit card can be used to provide a vehicle security deposit. The credit card holder must be present and able to sign for the vehicle security deposit upon vehicle collection. The credit card holder is jointly and severally liable for any damage to the rental vehicle.Any type of pre-paid travel card is not acceptable as a means to provide a vehicle security deposit. Visa and MasterCard debit cards are acceptable provided the card is being used as a credit card.
Debited vehicle security deposits are subject to a 2% credit card administration fee in addition to the vehicle security deposit amount. Accepted credit cards are Visa or MasterCard.
If a Liability Reduction Option is not selected, the vehicle security deposit is AU$3,500 for the Breezer, Nomad, Warrior and Wanderer or AU$5,000 for the Quattro and Off-Roader 4wd payable by credit card.
The AU$3,500 or AU$5,000 is debited to the hirer’s credit card when the vehicle is collected. For this reason it is important that the hirer have the funds available on the credit card and that the amount does not exceed the hirer’s daily withdrawal allowance available on the credit card.
If Liability Reduction Option 1 has been taken the vehicle security deposit is AU$1,500 for the Breezer, Nomad, Warrior, Wanderer, or $2,500 for the Quattro and Off-Roader 4wd.
The AU$1,500 or AU$2,500 is debited to the hirer’s credit card when the vehicle is collected. For this reason it is important that the hirer have the funds available on the credit card and that the amount does not exceed the hirer’s daily withdrawal allowance available on the credit card.
If Liability Reduction Option 2 is selected with or without Tyre and Windscreen Cover or the package booked is the Smart Pack, the vehicle security deposit is AU$220 for the Breezer, Nomad, Warrior, Wanderer and the Quattro or AU$500 for the Off- Roader 4wd.
The AU$220/$500 is taken as an imprint to the hirer’s credit card when the vehicle is collected. An imprint simply records a figure against the hirer’s credit card of AU$220/$500 that Backpacker can then debit if required.
The vehicle security deposit is fully refundable, including the credit card surcharge if the card used to provide the vehicle security deposit is a Visa or MasterCard, provided the vehicle is returned on time, to the correct location, undamaged, in a clean condition and with full fuel tanks (fuel being petrol or diesel) and gas bottle. Except where the customer has purchased the Pre-Purchase Gas Option (PGO is included in the Smart Pack) and/or Pre Purchase Fuel (PPF), failure to return the vehicle with full petrol or diesel tanks and/or a full LPG bottle will result in refill charges, which will be advised upon return of the vehicle.
Backpacker reserves the right to retain an AU$220 cleaning fee if the vehicle is not returned in a clean condition. This includes smoking related cleaning, as smoking is not permitted in the vehicle. The toilet and waste water tank must be emptied prior to the return of the vehicle, or an additional AU$125 soiling fee will be retained.
FOR SECURITY PURPOSES, ONLY THE HIRERS CREDIT CARD CAN BE USED FOR VEHICLE SECURITY DEPOSITS.
RENTAL DURATION
- Minimum rental period is five days for the Nomad, Warrior, Wanderer, Quattro and Off-Roader 4wd vehicle types with the exception of one-way hires. Please refer to one-way rentals section for more information.
- Minimum rental period is three days for the Breezer vehicle type with the exception of one-way hires. Please refer to one-way rentals section for more information.
- Minimum rental period is 7 days between December 15 and January 5 with the exception of the Quattro which is 10 days.
- Quattro rentals from Sydney that collect during the Bathurst races, 4 to 10 October 2011, will have a minimum rental requirement of 7 days.
- Quattro rentals from Melbourne that collect during the Phillip Island races, 11 to 16 October 2011, will have a minimum rental requirement of 7 days.
- Minimum rental period is subject to change during peak periods.
- Rental days are calculated on a calendar day basis. When calculating the number of days a vehicle is rented, the day of pick-up is counted as day one of the rental, regardless of pick-up time. The day of the vehicle’s return is counted as the final day of the rental.
- Late pick-up or early return of vehicle, does not entitle the hirer to any refund of the unused portion of the rental.
Late returns will be charged on a per day basis. Failure to obtain authorisation for a rental extension will result in a daily fee of AU$150 in addition to the daily rate.

The Sydney Downtown (SYX) location allows Breezer pick-ups only with a minimum rental period of seven days when return is to Sydney Mascot (no one-way fee applicable).
Only Breezer vehicle collection is allowed from the Sydney Downtown (SYX) office. No vehicle returns available to the Downtown office. The Breezer is not available to or from the Alice Springs location.
The Breezer has a 3-day minimum rental period when pick up and return city are the same. All other vehicles have a 5-day rental minimum when pick up and return location are the same.
- AU$260 one-way fee applies to one-way rentals with a minimum hire requirement of 7 days with the exception of one-way rentals between Alice Springs and Darwin (and vice-versa) which has an AU$360 one-way fee.
- AU$360 one-way fee applies to one-way rentals with a minimum hire requirement of 14 days.
Backpacker reserves the right at its sole discretion to restrict vehicle movements in certain areas due to adverse road or weather conditions and/or the distance to nominated destinations in relation to the length of the hire period.

Please note: *While it is legal for a child to sit in the front, it is not safe and Backpacker do not recommended any child under 26kgs (7- 8yrs) travel in a front seat. *Toddlers can move to a booster seat when they out grow their child seat or weigh between 14 kg and 26 kg.
*Once a child’s eyes are level with the top of the back seat or the child is 26 kg or over, then they can come out of a booster and use an adult seat.
CHANGE OF LOCATION
If the customer wishes to change the pick up or drop-off location from what was originally booked, permission must be first obtained from the reservations or scheduling departments.
Subject to the change being approved, an additional charge of up to AU$700 may apply.
RENTAL EXTENSIONS
If the customer wishes to extend the rental whilst on hire, they must first obtain authorisation from Reservations or any of the Backpacker branches. The rental extension is subject to vehicle availability. The cost of an extended rental must be paid by credit card over the telephone on
confirmation of the rental extension. The rate charged may not reflect the original rate booked. Failure to obtain authorisation will result in a daily fee of AU$150 in addition to the daily rate.
TRANSFERS
Backpacker clients will need to make their own way from the airport to the applicable Backpacker branch, at their own expense.
INFRINGEMENTS AND ADMINISTRATION FEES
Backpacker reserves the right to charge the hirer for any speeding, toll way or parking fines and/or vehicle damage including Third Party property damage not reported on return of the vehicle. In addition to these costs Backpacker, reserve the right to charge for associated administration costs for processing the fines (irrespective of liability) and/or all claims in the event of the customer not having a NIL liability. In addition to the costs associated per fine and/or claim, an administration fee of $60 will be applicable.
EXCHANGE RATE / CURRENCY VARIATIONS
All credit card transactions are conducted in Australian dollars. Due to exchange rate fluctuations and bank transaction fees there could be some variance in the amount refunded compared to the amount initially charged. Backpacker does not accept any liability for variances up or down.
LICENCE
A current and full (i.e. no probationary licences are accepted) motor vehicle driver’s licence is required and must be produced upon vehicle collection. Should a foreign licence be in a language other then English it must be accompanied by a current international driving permit issued in the same country as the driver’s licence was issued. An accredited English translation will be accepted in lieu of an international driving permit.
AGE Restrictions for the Warrior, Wanderer, Quattro and Off-Roader 4wd vehicles
Drivers must be 21 years of age or over.
AGE Restrictions for the Nomad and Breezer
Drivers must be 18 years of age or over.
MULTIPLE RENTALS
Should a customer have more than one consecutive rental they can be combined to qualify for longer-term hire discounts off the vehicle rate. Consecutive campervan hire in Australia and New Zealand and/or consecutive car hire in New Zealand for Backpacker can be combined to qualify if the vehicle collection date/s are within a 3-month period. For all rentals to qualify each booking needs to be made at the same time. If a customer makes another booking at a later time, the new booking can be combined to qualify if the vehicle collection date/s are within a 3-month period however, the original booking/s will only qualify for a discount if the booking/s are not already travelling or travelled.
Note that 2WD car hire in Australia cannot be combined with any campervan or New Zealand car hire to qualify for longer-term discounts.
Longer-term discounts must be requested at the time of booking.
For campervans that pick up and drop off on the same day, the less expensive rental day will be free of charge. This also applies to the liability reduction option or the Smart Pack if applicable.
If multiple hires are within the same country and total days exceed 50 days only the maximum charge applicable to the liability reduction option or the Smart pack will apply. If combining a vehicle hire with another Backpacker vehicle that has a more expensive Smart pack or liability reduction option, the more expensive Smart pack/ liability reduction maximum cost is applied.
Vehicle security deposits can be transferred between most multiple rentals. This service is available when the booked products are campervans and the vehicle security deposit amount is the same.
ROAD RESTRICTIONS
- 2WD campervans can only be driven on sealed/bitumen roads. The only exceptions to this are well-maintained access roads of less than twelve kilometres* to recognised campgrounds and well-maintained, recognised roads on Kangaroo Island (South Australia).
*Should a customer wish to travel on an unsealed road that is greater than twelve kilometres in length to access a recognised campground special permission can be arranged pending road condition, weather and distance. Please contact your local representative to discuss.
- 4WD campervans can also be driven on recognised unsealed roads.
- 4WD vehicles are NOT permitted to travel to the following areas: Simpson Desert, Strzelecki Track, Gunbarrel Highway, the Old Gunbarrel Hwy, Cape York, the Bungle Bungles, Oodnadatta Track, Birdsville Track, Tanami Track, the Plenty Highway, the Burke Development Road from Chillagoe to Normanton and Savannah Way from Normanton to Borroloola, Fraser Island, Finke Road (between Alice Springs and Oodnadatta), Central
Arnhem Road, Arnhem Land in general, Gibb River Road, Canning Stock Route, the Lost City in Litchfield Park, Boggy Hole (Finke Gorge National Park) and the Old South Road from Maryvale to Finke.
Backpacker reserves the right at its sole discretion to restrict vehicle movements in certain areas due to adverse road or weather conditions and/or the distance to nominated destinations in relation to the length of the hire period.
ON-ROAD ASSISTANCE
Any problems associated with the vehicle, including equipment failure, must be reported to Backpacker as soon as possible and within 24 hours in order to give Backpacker the opportunity to rectify the problem during the rental. Failure to do so will compromise any claims for compensation. Backpacker does not accept liability for any claims submitted after this period.
REPAIRS
Repairs up to AU$200 may be affected without authorisation and will be reimbursed. For amounts over AU$200, Backpacker will need to be informed in advance. Repairs will be approved provided the hirer was not directly responsible for the damage. Receipts must be submitted for any repair or the claim will not be paid.
CHANGE OF VEHICLE
Should the vehicle booked be unavailable Backpacker reserves the right to substitute an alternative vehicle without prior notification and at no extra cost. This shall not constitute a breach of contract and does not entitle the hirer to a refund.
VEHICLE CATEGORY
Vehicles cannot be requested by make or model, only by vehicle category.
VOLUNTARY DOWNGRADE
Should the hirer decide to take a smaller vehicle than booked they will not be entitled to any refund.
DISCRETION
Backpacker reserves the right to refuse any rental at its discretion.
ANIMALS
No animals are permitted in our vehicles, excluding guide dogs.
PERSONAL AND COMPANY CHEQUES
Personal and Company cheques will not be accepted as payment for rentals at the time of pick-up. These must be paid to Backpacker 14 days prior to commencement of rentals. Personal or Company cheques are not acceptable as the vehicle security deposit.
CALCULATION ERRORS
Backpacker will not honour calculation errors. Should a calculation error occur Backpacker will charge for the shortfall.
DISCLAIMER
Illustrations and text in any of our brochures or website are a representation only of the vehicle depicted. Variances in the vehicles offered for rental may occur due to substitutions made by Backpacker or modifications and/or upgrades to the vehicle design made by the manufacturer.
BRANCHES FOR VEHICLE COLLECTION AND RETURN
The Sydney Downtown office can facilitate Backpacker Breezer bookings only for vehicle collection.
No vehicles can be returned to this location. Last vehicle collections an hour before closing.
All branches are closed on Christmas Day (25th of December).
Please ensure that you allow adequate time to complete the required paperwork when collecting or returning your vehicle. All vehicles must be collected from and returned to a Backpacker Campervans branch.
Please note the Breezer is only available from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Byron/Ballina Airport, Adelaide, Darwin, Perth and Cairns

Information disclaimer
The rates on this website are often heavily discounted. This is due to our negotiated rates and bulk buying power. On very rare occasions, a rate may be displayed incorrectly due to our, or a vehicle supplier's error. In such a case, if you book with us at a quoted rate that is incorrect, we will notify you of any price change and give you the option to proceed or cancel. We make every effort to keep information on our site up to date, but we cannot guarantee this website is free of errors or omissions and retain the right to update or change the information published at any time.
Liability
To the extent permitted by law we/the owners of this website will not be liable to you or to any third party (whether in contract, tort, or otherwise) for any direct, indirect or consequential loss or damage (including but not limited to any accident, injury, delay or loss of enjoyment) arising out of your reliance upon information contained on this website, including but not limited to your use (or inability to use) any products or services described or procured through this website.
When you pick up your vehicle, you will be required to sign a rental agreement with the supplier of the vehicle. Your rental and use of the vehicle will be governed by the terms of the rental agreement and any other documentation or information provided to you by the supplier at the time you pick up your vehicle. The rental agreement is between you and the supplier and we will not be liable to you or to any third party in relation to the terms of the supplier’s rental agreement or any other documentation provided to you by the supplier at the time of pick up.
While we will make reasonable efforts to ensure we are representing only reputable suppliers, we make no warranty about the fitness or suitability of any third party (supplier) product or service and will not accept responsibility for the quality or fitness of any vehicle. We welcome feedback from our customers on their experience with our suppliers. We may, at our discretion, provide you with reasonable assistance in resolving any dispute you may have with a supplier.
Our total liability to you in relation to your use of this website and the information contained on this website will not exceed the dollar amount of the deposit we have received from you in relation to your booking/rental. Refunds will not be made for bookings cancelled due to inclement weather. Again, we strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance. Your use of this website is governed by the laws of New Zealand and the jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts.
Booking information
To make a booking you must complete our booking form which is easy to follow and secured with the latest encryption technology. Once we receive your form, we will, subject to availability, confirm your booking by emailing you a confirmation voucher and invoice. The deposit required to secure your vehicle (as shown on the secure booking page) will only be processed on your credit card when your booking is confirmed. Please note that a 1.75% credit card charge will be added when your payment is processed.
A booking is confirmed when you have been emailed a confirmation voucher and at this stage the deposit is processed on your card and becomes non-refundable and any cancellation fees stated in the supplier's terms apply. Upon receipt of your confirmation, please check your details carefully and notify us immediately if there are any incorrect details, as it may not be possible to make changes at a later date.
If you are booking via phone, please make sure you have read the terms and conditions of the vehicle you wish to rent first. Our reservations consultant will ask you if you have read the terms and agree to them before proceeding. The onus is always on the renter to ensure they make themselves fully aware of the terms displayed on our website.
Information disclosure
In booking on this website you acknowledge that we disclose your information to your selected Supplier in order to provide the requested rental services.
Amendments
Please note that some suppliers treat an amendment as a new booking and apply the rate current at the time the amendment is made to recalculate the entire booking amount (not just the days changed). If the rental period is increased, an additional deposit may be required. If the rental period is shortened which results in a reduction of the rental charges, the deposit amount will remain unchanged, and the difference between the original and revised deposit is forfeited (it cannot be used towards remaining rental charges). To request a change to a confirmed booking, please use the alterations request link on your confirmation. Any alterations are subject to availability and the approval of the supplier. In addition to the alteration policy of the supplier stated in their terms, the following charges will apply:
Car rental alterations (all charges stated in local currency):
To change dates or times that result in a recalculation of rental rates, or to change vehicles or locations: 25.00
To add or remove extras to/from a confirmed booking: 10.00
Motorhome rental alterations (all charges stated in local currency):
To change dates or times that result in a recalculation of rental rates, or to change vehicles or locations: 75.00
To add or remove extras to/from confirmed booking: 20.00
The alteration fee will not be charged if your alteration request is not possible.
Vehicle Capacity and fitness to drive
Under no circumstances are you permitted to carry more passengers than the vehicle you rent is legally registered to carry, and if you do your insurance may be invalidated. The number of seatbelts (and passengers) is indicated next to each vehicle on this website. Luggage capacity where shown is an indication only and we will not be responsible should you be unable to fit your entire luggage into a vehicle. It is your responsibility to choose a journey that is within your capabilities. A vehicle supplier can refuse to rent a vehicle to any person who is in their opinion unfit to drive or does not meet eligibility requirements. In such circumstances we will have no further liability to you.
Refund Policy
We are committed to providing a quality service and aim for complete customer satisfaction. In the event of cancellation, any refunds or penalties are detailed in the terms and conditions of your selected vehicle that you are asked to read and accept at time of booking. In the event you are unsatisfied with our service, please contact us within 48 hours of placing your booking or request and we will work to resolve any issues and determine if compensation is due. In the event you have completed your rental and are unhappy with your vehicle, we are happy to assist you in seeking compensation from the operator of the vehicle.

Backpacker Campers AU Rental Terms for travel between 01-Apr-2012 and 31-Mar-2013
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR RENTALS
On arrival you will be required to sign a rental agreement with the operators of Backpacker Campers Australia. Here is a summary of their terms and conditions.
DEFINITIONS
The following definitions apply for the Terms and Conditions for Backpacker Campers Australia.
- The Supplier means the operator of Backpacker Campers Australia.
- The Client is also referred to as the hirer (s) or renter (s).
PAYMENT TERMS
* The initial deposit paid is non-refundable. Payment will be deducted from your nominated credit card at the time of confirmation(Visa or Mastercard only).
* The balance payable is due to the supplier upon collection of your vehicle.
* A bond amount of AU$3,500 for the Breezer, Nomad, Warrior and Wanderer or AU$5,000 for the Off-Roader 4wd is also due upon arrival. This amount is deducted from your credit card is fully refundable when the vehicle is returned to the correct location on time, is full of fuel and all other terms of the Rental Contract have been complied with. Please read the Terms and Conditions for full details.
Note: full balance of payment (including the deposit) will be collected at the time of confirmation if you have elected to process your booking in a currency different to AUD.
The deposit is non refundable. In addition to forfeiting your deposit, the following charges apply:
- If cancelled up to 25 days prior to pick-up No Further Fee
- If cancelled from 24 to 10 days prior to pick-up 20% of Total Rental
- If cancelled 9 to 4 days prior to pick-up 50% of Total Rental
- If cancelled 3 days prior or on day of pick up or No-Show 100% of Total Rental
- If vehicle is returned early for any reason whatsoever no refund is available for the unused portion of the hire
CREDIT CARDS
The credit card holder will be jointly and severally liable as a customer. Accepted credit cards are Visa Card and MasterCard. A non-refundable 2% administration fee will apply to all Visa and MasterCard transactions. Credit card administration fees also apply to debited vehicle security deposits and only the hirer’s credit card is acceptable to use for the purpose of the vehicle security deposit.

This document contains a summary of some of the Rental Conditions. For full detailed conditions refer to the rental agreement provided when the vehicle is collected. Please note all prices quoted in this document are in Australian dollars. Rates and conditions are subject to change without notice.
QUOTES
Backpacker use ‘flex rates’ to determine the daily rental rate. Backpacker flex rates are released by each Friday effective for sale from the following Monday. All Backpacker rates/quotes expire after seven days of issue.

SMART PACK:
The Smart Pack for campervan rentals is payable per day in addition to the daily rental rate.
Nomad, Breezer, Warrior and Wanderer AU$38 per day (maximum AU$1,900 per rental)
Quattro AU$49 per day (maximum AU$2,450 per rental)
Off-Roader 4WD AU$53 per day (maximum AU$2,650 per rental)
In addition to the inclusions in the Flex Rate, the Smart Pack includes:

- LP Gas Refill (PGO - refill for gas bottle used for cooking and heating hot water in vehicles with a hot water facility upon return of vehicle)

BACKPACKER STRONGLY RECOMMENDS THE SMART PACK FOR TRAVEL WITH PEACE OF MIND.
FOR YOUR PROTECTION
Personal injury is covered in most cases through registration Third Party insurance. Backpacker strongly recommends that all people travelling in Australia take out personal travel insurance.
All vehicles are insured for the damage to the vehicle or to the property of a Third Party. The hirer is responsible for the first AU$3,500 (“the liability”) for the Breezer, Nomad, Warrior and Wanderer or AU$5,000 (“the liability”) for the Quattro and Off- Roader 4wd of the cost of damage to Third Party property or to the rented vehicle, including single vehicle accident (does not include single vehicle roll over), windscreen and tyre damage, towing and recovery costs, theft, fire, break-in or vandalism with the exception of the ‘exclusions’. This also includes the cost of the daily rental for the period the vehicle is off fleet for accident repairs.
The liability is applicable regardless of who is at fault and must be paid at the time the accident report is completed, not at the completion of the rental. The liability will be refunded if Backpacker is successful in recovering the cost of the damages from the Third Party. Please note that Third Party claims can take months to resolve.
The liability applies in respect of each claim, not rental.

The liability can be reduced, in most circumstances, by the purchase of Liability Reduction Option 1 or Liability Reduction Option 2. Note Liability Reduction Option 2 is included in the Smart Pack.

Tyre and Windscreen Cover

Where the hirer purchased tyre and windscreen cover unlimited windscreen and tyres will be covered for accidental damage.

Additional Protection Coverage

Where the hirer purchases Additional Protection Coverage the cost of damage resulting from a single vehicle roll over will be covered.
Additional Protection Coverage can only be purchased in conjunction with Liability Reduction Option 2 or the Smart Pack.

BACKPACKER STRONGLY RECOMMENDS OUR CUSTOMERS TAKE THE SMART PACK WITH ADDITIONAL PROTECTION COVERAGE FOR TRAVEL WITH PEACE OF MIND.
EXCLUSIONS:
All liability cover will be made void if any of the following ‘Exclusions’ are breached:
1. Overhead and underbody damage to the vehicle except where Liability Reduction Option 2 or the Smart Pack has been purchased (does not cover single vehicle roll over).
2. Tyre and windscreen damage unless tyre and windscreen cover has been purchased.
3. Any water related damage which includes, but is not limited to:
a) any vehicle submersion
b) creek or river crossing
c) driving through flooded areas
d) beach driving
4. Personal belongings. Backpacker recommends the hirer does not leave valuables in the vehicle and that they have travel insurance to cover for the loss/damage of personal belongings.
5. Any damage caused by wilful misconduct (e.g. sitting or standing on the bonnet or roof of the vehicle).
6. Any damage caused while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
7. Damage caused to the vehicle by snow chains.
8. A single vehicle roll over occurs except where Additional Protection Coverage has been purchased.
9. The Customer will be liable for any costs associated with the incorrect use of fuel or the use of Bio-Diesel which should not be used (fuel being diesel or petrol), or water or other contamination of fuel.
10. The cost to retrieve or recover a vehicle, which may include, but is not limited to a vehicle that has become bogged, submerged, caught, trapped, stuck or restricted in anyway and/or has been abandoned.
11. The cost to replace keys, which have been lost or retrieval of keys, which have been locked in a vehicle.
12. The vehicle rented may only be used to carry the maximum number of passengers as dictated by the vehicle type. If more passengers are carried than what is allowed Backpacker does not accept any liability.
13. Damage caused to the vehicle because total load (kg) has exceeded recommended load as stated in vehicle manual. Vehicles are not to be used for the purpose of transporting and haulage of goods other than what might be reasonably expected of a leisure rental.
14. Drivers not identified on the rental agreement and/or drivers that have a licence that has been cancelled or suspended and/or drivers who have a licence that is classified as a learners or probationary licence.
VEHICLE SECURITY DEPOSIT
Upon vehicle collection, a vehicle security deposit is required. The amount is determined by the Liability Reduction Option selected.
For security purposes, only a credit card can be used to provide a vehicle security deposit. The credit card holder must be present and able to sign for the vehicle security deposit upon vehicle collection. The credit card holder is jointly and severally liable for any damage to the rental vehicle. Any type of pre-paid travel card is not acceptable as a means to provide a vehicle security deposit. Visa and MasterCard debit cards are acceptable provided the card is being used as a credit card.
Debited vehicle security deposits are subject to a 2% credit card administration fee in addition to the vehicle security deposit amount. Accepted credit cards are Visa or MasterCard.
If a Liability Reduction Option is not selected, the vehicle security deposit is AU$3,500 for the Breezer, Nomad, Warrior and Wanderer or AU$5,000 for the Quattro and Off-Roader 4wd payable by credit card.
The AU$3,500 or AU$5,000 is debited to the hirer’s credit card when the vehicle is collected. For this reason it is important that the hirer have the funds available on the credit card and that the amount does not exceed the hirer’s daily withdrawal allowance available on the credit card.
If Liability Reduction Option 1 has been taken the vehicle security deposit is AU$1,500 for the Breezer, Nomad, Warrior, Wanderer, or $2,500 for the Quattro and Off-Roader 4wd.
The AU$1,500 or AU$2,500 is debited to the hirer’s credit card when the vehicle is collected. For this reason it is important that the hirer have the funds available on the credit card and that the amount does not exceed the hirer’s daily withdrawal allowance available on the credit card.
If Liability Reduction Option 2 is selected or the package booked is the Smart Pack, the vehicle security deposit is AU$220 for the Breezer, Nomad, Warrior, Wanderer and the Quattro or AU$500 for the Off- Roader 4wd.
The AU$220/$500 is taken as an imprint to the hirer’s credit card when the vehicle is collected. An imprint simply records a figure against the hirer’s credit card of AU$220/$500 that Backpacker can then debit if required.
The vehicle security deposit is fully refundable, including the credit card surcharge if the card used to provide the vehicle security deposit is a Visa or MasterCard, provided the vehicle is returned on time, to the correct location, undamaged, in a clean condition and with full fuel tanks (fuel being petrol or diesel) and gas bottle. Except where the customer has purchased the Pre-Purchase Gas Option (PGO is included in the Smart Pack) and/or Pre Purchase Fuel (PPF), failure to return the vehicle with full petrol or diesel tanks and/or a full LPG bottle will result in refill charges, which will be advised upon return of the vehicle.
Backpacker reserves the right to retain an AU$220 cleaning fee if the vehicle is not returned in a clean condition. This includes smoking related cleaning, as smoking is not permitted in the vehicle. The toilet and waste water tank must be emptied prior to the return of the vehicle, or an additional AU$125 soiling fee will be retained.
FOR SECURITY PURPOSES, ONLY THE HIRERS CREDIT CARD CAN BE USED FOR VEHICLE SECURITY DEPOSITS.
RENTAL DURATION
- Minimum rental period is five days for the Nomad, Warrior, Wanderer, Quattro and Off-Roader 4wd vehicle types with the exception of one-way hires. Please refer to one-way rentals section for more information.
- Minimum rental period is three days for the Breezer vehicle type with the exception of one-way hires. Please refer to one-way rentals section for more information.
- Minimum rental period is 7 days between December 15 and January 5 with the exception of the Quattro which is 10 days.
- Quattro rentals from Sydney that collect during the Bathurst races will have a minimum rental requirement of 7 days.
- Quattro rentals from Melbourne that collect during the Phillip Island races, will have a minimum rental requirement of 7 days.
- Minimum rental period is subject to change during peak periods.
- Rental days are calculated on a calendar day basis. When calculating the number of days a vehicle is rented, the day of pick-up is counted as day one of the rental, regardless of pick-up time. The day of the vehicle’s return is counted as the final day of the rental.
- Late pick-up or early return of vehicle, does not entitle the hirer to any refund of the unused portion of the rental.
Late returns will be charged on a per day basis. Failure to obtain authorisation for a rental extension will result in a daily fee of AU$150 in addition to the daily rate.

The Breezer has a 3-day minimum rental period when pick up and return city are the same. All other vehicles have a 5-day rental minimum when pick up and return location are the same.
- A one-way fee of $260 applies where pick up originates from Cairns, Brisbane, Byron Bay/Ballina Airport, Sydney Mascot, Melbourne or Adelaide, and also returns to one of these locations. Should the hire originate or return to or from Darwin, Alice Springs or Perth, the one-way fee will be $360. Example, a Cairns to Darwin one-way rental would incur a one-way fee of $360, where a one-way rental from Cairns to Brisbane will incur a one-way fee of $260.
- Backpacker reserves the right at its sole discretion to restrict vehicle movements in certain areas due to adverse road or weather conditions and/or the distance to nominated destinations in relation to the length of the hire period.

Please note: *While it is legal for a child to sit in the front, it is not safe and Backpacker do not recommended any child under 26kgs (7- 8yrs) travel in a front seat. *Toddlers can move to a booster seat when they out grow their child seat or weigh between 14 kg and 26 kg.
*Once a child’s eyes are level with the top of the back seat or the child is 26 kg or over, then they can come out of a booster and use an adult seat.
CHANGE OF LOCATION
If the customer wishes to change the pick up or drop-off location from what was originally booked, permission must be first obtained from the reservations or scheduling departments.
Subject to the change being approved, an additional charge of up to AU$700 may apply.
RENTAL EXTENSIONS
If the customer wishes to extend the rental whilst on hire, they must first obtain authorisation from Reservations or any of the Backpacker branches. The rental extension is subject to vehicle availability. The cost of an extended rental must be paid by credit card over the telephone on confirmation of the rental extension. The rate charged may not reflect the original rate booked. Failure to obtain authorisation will result in a daily fee of AU$150 in addition to the daily rate.
TRANSFERS
Backpacker clients will need to make their own way from the airport to the applicable Backpacker branch, at their own expense.
INFRINGEMENTS AND ADMINISTRATION FEES
Backpacker reserves the right to charge the hirer for any speeding, toll way or parking fines and/or vehicle damage including Third Party property damage not reported on return of the vehicle. In addition to these costs Backpacker, reserve the right to charge for associated administration costs for processing the fines (irrespective of liability) and/or all claims in the event of the customer not having a NIL liability. In addition to the costs associated per fine and/or claim, an administration fee of $60 will be applicable.
EXCHANGE RATE / CURRENCY VARIATIONS
All credit card transactions are conducted in Australian dollars. Due to exchange rate fluctuations and bank transaction fees there could be some variance in the amount refunded compared to the amount initially charged. Backpacker does not accept any liability for variances up or down.
LICENCE
A current and full (i.e. no probationary licences are accepted) motor vehicle driver’s licence is required and must be produced upon vehicle collection. Should a foreign licence be in a language other then English it must be accompanied by a current international driving permit issued in the same country as the driver’s licence was issued. An accredited English translation will be accepted in lieu of an international driving permit.
AGE Restrictions for the Warrior, Wanderer, Quattro and Off-Roader 4wd vehicles
Drivers must be 21 years of age or over.
AGE Restrictions for the Nomad and Breezer
Drivers must be 18 years of age or over.
MULTIPLE RENTALS
Should a customer have more than one consecutive rental they can be combined to qualify for longer-term hire discounts off the vehicle rate. Consecutive campervan hire in Australia and New Zealand and/or consecutive car hire in New Zealand for Backpacker can be combined to qualify if the vehicle collection date/s is within a 3-month period. For all rentals to qualify each booking needs to be made at the same time. If a customer makes another booking at a later time, the new booking can be combined to qualify if the vehicle collection date/s is within a 3-month period however, the original booking/s will only qualify for a discount if the booking/s are not already travelling or travelled.
Note that 2WD car hire in Australia cannot be combined with any campervan or New Zealand car hire to qualify for longer-term discounts.
Longer-term discounts must be requested at the time of booking.
For campervans that pick up and drop off on the same day, the less expensive rental day will be free of charge. This also applies to the liability reduction option or the Smart Pack if applicable.
If multiple hires are within the same country and total days exceed 50 days only the maximum charge applicable to the liability reduction option or the Smart pack will apply. If combining a vehicle hire with another Backpacker vehicle that has a more expensive Smart pack or liability reduction option, the more expensive Smart pack/ liability reduction maximum cost is applied.
Vehicle security deposits can be transferred between most multiple rentals. This service is available when the booked products are campervans and the vehicle security deposit amount is the same.
ROAD RESTRICTIONS
- 2WD campervans can only be driven on sealed/bitumen roads. The only exceptions to this are well-maintained access roads of less than twelve kilometres* to recognised campgrounds and well-maintained, recognised roads on Kangaroo Island (South Australia).
*Should a customer wish to travel on an unsealed road that is greater than twelve kilometres in length to access a recognised campground special permission can be arranged pending road condition, weather and distance. Please contact your local representative to discuss.
- 4WD campervans can also be driven on recognised unsealed roads.
- 4WD vehicles are NOT permitted to travel to the following areas: Simpson Desert, Strzelecki Track, Gunbarrel Highway, the Old Gunbarrel Hwy, Cape York, the Bungle Bungles, Oodnadatta Track, Birdsville Track, Tanami Track, the Plenty Highway, the Burke Development Road from Chillagoe to Normanton and Savannah Way from Normanton to Borroloola, Fraser Island, Finke Road (between Alice Springs and Oodnadatta), Central Arnhem Road, Arnhem Land in general, Gibb River Road, Canning Stock Route, the Lost City in Litchfield Park, Boggy Hole (Finke Gorge National Park) and the Old South Road from Maryvale to Finke.
Backpacker reserves the right at its sole discretion to restrict vehicle movements in certain areas due to adverse road or weather conditions and/or the distance to nominated destinations in relation to the length of the hire period.
ON-ROAD ASSISTANCE
Any problems associated with the vehicle, including equipment failure, must be reported to Backpacker as soon as possible and within 24 hours in order to give Backpacker the opportunity to rectify the problem during the rental. Failure to do so will compromise any claims for compensation. Backpacker does not accept liability for any claims submitted after this period.
REPAIRS
Repairs up to AU$200 may be affected without authorisation and will be reimbursed. For amounts over AU$200, Backpacker will need to be informed in advance. Repairs will be approved provided the hirer was not directly responsible for the damage. Receipts must be submitted for any repair or the claim will not be paid.
CHANGE OF VEHICLE
Should the vehicle booked be unavailable Backpacker reserves the right to substitute an alternative vehicle without prior notification and at no extra cost. This shall not constitute a breach of contract and does not entitle the hirer to a refund.
VEHICLE CATEGORY
Vehicles cannot be requested by make or model, only by vehicle category.
VOLUNTARY DOWNGRADE
Should the hirer decide to take a smaller vehicle than booked they will not be entitled to any refund.
DISCRETION
Backpacker reserves the right to refuse any rental at its discretion.
ANIMALS
No animals are permitted in our vehicles, excluding guide dogs.
PERSONAL AND COMPANY CHEQUES
Personal and Company cheques will not be accepted as payment for rentals at the time of pick-up. These must be paid to Backpacker 14 days prior to commencement of rentals. Personal or Company cheques are not acceptable as the vehicle security deposit.
CALCULATION ERRORS
Backpacker will not honour calculation errors. Should a calculation error occur Backpacker will charge for the shortfall.

Last vehicle collections are an hour before closing. Please ensure that you allow adequate time to complete the required paperwork when collecting or returning your vehicle. All vehicles must be collected from and returned to a Backpacker Campervans branch.

In such a case, if you book with us at a quoted rate that is incorrect, we will notify you of any price change and give you the option to proceed or cancel. Liability
To the extent permitted by law we/the owners of this website will not be liable to you or to any third party (whether in contract, tort, or otherwise) for any direct, indirect or consequential loss or damage (including but not limited to any accident, injury, delay or loss of enjoyment) arising out of your reliance upon information contained on this website, including but not limited to your use (or inability to use) any products or services described or procured through this website.
When you pick up your vehicle, you will be required to sign a rental agreement with the supplier of the vehicle. Your rental and use of the vehicle will be governed by the terms of the rental agreement and any other documentation or information provided to you by the supplier at the time you pick up your vehicle. The rental agreement is between you and the supplier and we will not be liable to you or to any third party in relation to the terms of the supplier’s rental agreement or any other documentation provided to you by the supplier at the time of pick up.
While we will make reasonable efforts to ensure we are representing only reputable suppliers, we make no warranty about the fitness or suitability of any third party (supplier) product or service and will not accept responsibility for the quality or fitness of any vehicle. We welcome feedback from our customers on their experience with our suppliers. We may, at our discretion, provide you with reasonable assistance in resolving any dispute you may have with a supplier.
Our total liability to you in relation to your use of this website and the information contained on this website will not exceed the dollar amount of the deposit we have received from you in relation to your booking/rental. Refunds will not be made for bookings cancelled due to inclement weather. Again, we strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance. Your use of this website is governed by the laws of New Zealand and the jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts.
Booking information
To make a booking you must complete our booking form which is easy to follow and secured with the latest encryption technology. Once we receive your form, we will, subject to availability, confirm your booking by emailing you a confirmation voucher and invoice. The deposit required to secure your vehicle (as shown on the secure booking page) will only be processed on your credit card when your booking is confirmed. Please note that a 1.75% credit card charge will be added when your payment is processed.
A booking is confirmed when you have been emailed a confirmation voucher and at this stage the deposit is processed on your card and becomes non-refundable and any cancellation fees stated in the supplier's terms apply. Upon receipt of your confirmation, please check your details carefully and notify us immediately if there are any incorrect details, as it may not be possible to make changes at a later date.
If you are booking via phone, please make sure you have read the terms and conditions of the vehicle you wish to rent first. Our reservations consultant will ask you if you have read the terms and agree to them before proceeding. The onus is always on the renter to ensure they make themselves fully aware of the terms displayed on our website.
Information disclosure
In booking on this website you acknowledge that we disclose your information to your selected Supplier in order to provide the requested rental services.
Amendments
Please note that some suppliers treat an amendment as a new booking and apply the rate current at the time the amendment is made to recalculate the entire booking amount (not just the days changed). If the rental period is increased, an additional deposit may be required. If the rental period is shortened which results in a reduction of the rental charges, the deposit amount will remain unchanged, and the difference between the original and revised deposit is forfeited (it cannot be used towards remaining rental charges). To request a change to a confirmed booking, please use the alterations request link on your confirmation. Any alterations are subject to availability and the approval of the supplier. In addition to the alteration policy of the supplier stated in their terms, the following charges will apply:
Car rental alterations (all charges stated in local currency):
To change dates or times that result in a recalculation of rental rates, or to change vehicles or locations: 25.00
To add or remove extras to/from a confirmed booking: 10.00
Motorhome rental alterations (all charges stated in local currency):
To change dates or times that result in a recalculation of rental rates, or to change vehicles or locations: 75.00
To add or remove extras to/from confirmed booking: 20.00
The alteration fee will not be charged if your alteration request is not possible.
Vehicle Capacity and fitness to drive
Under no circumstances are you permitted to carry more passengers than the vehicle you rent is legally registered to carry, and if you do your insurance may be invalidated. The number of seatbelts (and passengers) is indicated next to each vehicle on this website. Luggage capacity where shown is an indication only and we will not be responsible should you be unable to fit your entire luggage into a vehicle. It is your responsibility to choose a journey that is within your capabilities. A vehicle supplier can refuse to rent a vehicle to any person who is in their opinion unfit to drive or does not meet eligibility requirements. In such circumstances we will have no further liability to you.
Refund Policy
We are committed to providing a quality service and aim for complete customer satisfaction. In the event of cancellation, any refunds or penalties are detailed in the terms and conditions of your selected vehicle that you are asked to read and accept at time of booking. In the event you are unsatisfied with our service, please contact us within 48 hours of placing your booking or request and we will work to resolve any issues and determine if compensation is due. In the event you have completed your rental and are unhappy with your vehicle, we are happy to assist you in seeking compensation from the operator of the vehicle.

Backpacker Campers AU Insurance
FOR YOUR PROTECTION
Personal injury is covered in most cases through registration Third Party insurance. Backpacker strongly recommends that all people travelling in Australia take out personal travel insurance.
All vehicles are insured for the damage to the vehicle or to the property of a Third Party. The hirer is responsible for the first AU$3,500 (“the liability”) for the Breezer, Nomad, Warrior and Wanderer or AU$5,000 (“the liability”) for the Quattro and Off- Roader 4wd of the cost of damage to Third Party property or to the rented vehicle, including single vehicle accident, windscreen and tyre damage, towing and recovery costs, theft, fire, break-in or vandalism with the exception of the ‘exclusions’. This also includes the cost of the daily rental for the period the vehicle is off fleet for accident repairs.
The liability is applicable regardless of who is at fault and must be paid at the time the accident report is completed, not at the completion of the rental. The liability will be refunded if Backpacker is successful in recovering the cost of the damages from the Third Party. Please note that Third Party claims can take months to resolve.
The liability applies in respect of each claim, not rental.

EXCLUSIONS:
All liability cover will be made void if any of the following ‘Exclusions’ are breached:
1. Overhead and underbody damage to the vehicle.
2. Tyre and windscreen damage unless tyre and windscreen cover has been purchased.
3. Any water related damage which includes, but is not limited to:
a) any vehicle submersion
b) creek or river crossing
c) driving through flooded areas
d) beach driving
4. Personal belongings. Backpacker recommends the hirer does not leave valuables in the vehicle and that they have travel insurance to cover for the loss/damage of personal belongings.
5. Any damage caused by wilful misconduct (e.g. sitting or standing on the bonnet or roof of the vehicle).
6. Any damage caused while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
7. Damage caused to the vehicle by snow chains.
8. A single vehicle roll over occurs.
9. The Customer will be liable for any costs associated with the incorrect use of fuel or the use of Bio-Diesel which should not be used (fuel being diesel or petrol), or water or other contamination of fuel.
10. The cost to retrieve or recover a vehicle, which may include, but is not limited to a vehicle that has become bogged, submerged, caught, trapped, stuck or restricted in anyway and/or has been abandoned.
11. The cost to replace keys, which have been lost or retrieval of keys, which have been locked in a vehicle.
12. The vehicle rented may only be used to carry the maximum number of passengers as dictated by the vehicle type. If more passengers are carried than what is allowed Backpacker does not accept any liability.
13. Damage caused to the vehicle because total load (kg) has exceeded recommended load as stated in vehicle manual. Vehicles are not to be used for the purpose of transporting and haulage of goods other than what might be reasonably expected of a leisure rental.
14. Drivers not identified on the rental agreement and/or drivers that have a licence that has been cancelled or suspended and/or drivers who have a licence that is classified as a learners or probationary licence.
VEHICLE SECURITY DEPOSIT
Upon vehicle collection, a vehicle security deposit is required. The amount is determined by the Liability Reduction Option selected.
For security purposes, only a credit card can be used to provide a vehicle security deposit. The credit card holder must be present and able to sign for the vehicle security deposit upon vehicle collection. The credit card holder is jointly and severally liable for any damage to the rental vehicle.Any type of pre-paid travel card is not acceptable as a means to provide a vehicle security deposit. Visa and MasterCard debit cards are acceptable provided the card is being used as a credit card.
Debited vehicle security deposits are subject to a 2% credit card administration fee in addition to the vehicle security deposit amount. Accepted credit cards are Visa or MasterCard.
If a Liability Reduction Option is not selected, the vehicle security deposit is AU$3,500 for the Breezer, Nomad, Warrior and Wanderer or AU$5,000 for the Quattro and Off-Roader 4wd payable by credit card.
The AU$3,500 or AU$5,000 is debited to the hirer’s credit card when the vehicle is collected. For this reason it is important that the hirer have the funds available on the credit card and that the amount does not exceed the hirer’s daily withdrawal allowance available on the credit card.
If Liability Reduction Option 1 has been taken the vehicle security deposit is AU$1,500 for the Breezer, Nomad, Warrior, Wanderer, or $2,500 for the Quattro and Off-Roader 4wd.
The AU$1,500 or AU$2,500 is debited to the hirer’s credit card when the vehicle is collected. For this reason it is important that the hirer have the funds available on the credit card and that the amount does not exceed the hirer’s daily withdrawal allowance available on the credit card.
If Liability Reduction Option 2 is selected with or without Tyre and Windscreen Cover or the package booked is the Smart Pack, the vehicle security deposit is AU$220 for the Breezer, Nomad, Warrior, Wanderer and the Quattro or AU$500 for the Off- Roader 4wd.
The AU$220/$500 is taken as an imprint to the hirer’s credit card when the vehicle is collected. An imprint simply records a figure against the hirer’s credit card of AU$220/$500 that Backpacker can then debit if required.
The vehicle security deposit is fully refundable, including the credit card surcharge if the card used to provide the vehicle security deposit is a Visa or MasterCard, provided the vehicle is returned on time, to the correct location, undamaged, in a clean condition and with full fuel tanks (fuel being petrol or diesel) and gas bottle. Except where the customer has purchased the Pre-Purchase Gas Option (PGO is included in the Smart Pack) and/or Pre Purchase Fuel (PPF), failure to return the vehicle with full petrol or diesel tanks and/or a full LPG bottle will result in refill charges, which will be advised upon return of the vehicle.
Backpacker reserves the right to retain an AU$220 cleaning fee if the vehicle is not returned in a clean condition. This includes smoking related cleaning, as smoking is not permitted in the vehicle. The toilet and waste water tank must be emptied prior to the return of the vehicle, or an additional AU$125 soiling fee will be retained.
FOR SECURITY PURPOSES, ONLY THE HIRERS CREDIT CARD CAN BE USED FOR VEHICLE SECURITY DEPOSITS.

14. Drivers not identified on the rental agreement and/or drivers that have a licence that has been cancelled or suspended and/or drivers who have a licence that is classified as a learners or probationary licence.
VEHICLE SECURITY DEPOSIT
Upon vehicle collection, a vehicle security deposit is required. The amount is determined by the Liability Reduction Option selected.
For security purposes, only a credit card can be used to provide a vehicle security deposit. The credit card holder must be present and able to sign for the vehicle security deposit upon vehicle collection. The credit card holder is jointly and severally liable for any damage to the rental vehicle. Any type of pre-paid travel card is not acceptable as a means to provide a vehicle security deposit. Visa and MasterCard debit cards are acceptable provided the card is being used as a credit card.
Debited vehicle security deposits are subject to a 2% credit card administration fee in addition to the vehicle security deposit amount. Accepted credit cards are Visa or MasterCard.
If a Liability Reduction Option is not selected, the vehicle security deposit is AU$3,500 for the Breezer, Nomad, Warrior and Wanderer or AU$5,000 for the Quattro and Off-Roader 4wd payable by credit card.
The AU$3,500 or AU$5,000 is debited to the hirer’s credit card when the vehicle is collected. For this reason it is important that the hirer have the funds available on the credit card and that the amount does not exceed the hirer’s daily withdrawal allowance available on the credit card.
If Liability Reduction Option 1 has been taken the vehicle security deposit is AU$1,500 for the Breezer, Nomad, Warrior, Wanderer, or $2,500 for the Quattro and Off-Roader 4wd.
The AU$1,500 or AU$2,500 is debited to the hirer’s credit card when the vehicle is collected. For this reason it is important that the hirer have the funds available on the credit card and that the amount does not exceed the hirer’s daily withdrawal allowance available on the credit card.
If Liability Reduction Option 2 is selected or the package booked is the Smart Pack, the vehicle security deposit is AU$220 for the Breezer, Nomad, Warrior, Wanderer and the Quattro or AU$500 for the Off- Roader 4wd.
The AU$220/$500 is taken as an imprint to the hirer’s credit card when the vehicle is collected. An imprint simply records a figure against the hirer’s credit card of AU$220/$500 that Backpacker can then debit if required.
The vehicle security deposit is fully refundable, including the credit card surcharge if the card used to provide the vehicle security deposit is a Visa or MasterCard, provided the vehicle is returned on time, to the correct location, undamaged, in a clean condition and with full fuel tanks (fuel being petrol or diesel) and gas bottle. Except where the customer has purchased the Pre-Purchase Gas Option (PGO is included in the Smart Pack) and/or Pre Purchase Fuel (PPF), failure to return the vehicle with full petrol or diesel tanks and/or a full LPG bottle will result in refill charges, which will be advised upon return of the vehicle.
Backpacker reserves the right to retain an AU$220 cleaning fee if the vehicle is not returned in a clean condition. This includes smoking related cleaning, as smoking is not permitted in the vehicle. The toilet and waste water tank must be emptied prior to the return of the vehicle, or an additional AU$125 soiling fee will be retained.
FOR SECURITY PURPOSES, ONLY THE HIRERS CREDIT CARD CAN BE USED FOR VEHICLE SECURITY DEPOSITS.
